Gum Disease
Gum disease is caused by bacteria called plaque. Plaque is a soft deposit which you can remove or agitate with your toothbrush, floss or interdental brushes.
There are 2 types of gum disease:
- Gingivitis is when your gums bleed when brushing.
- Periodontal disease is a more advance disease which involves the supporting bone.
If plaque remains on your teeth it can calcify (become hard) which is called calculus or tartar. This hard deposit does not cause any disease but we suggest we remove it as it can attract more bacterial growth.
We remove calculus either mechanically using a special hand piece with water or hand instruments. Our hygienists will work with you to decide the most appropriate method to use.
Our role is to advise and treat your gum disease however we might suggest a referral to a Specialist Periodontist.
